First of all, here’s a brief rundown about Tennis:

Tennis is played by millions of people world wide. It is known as a one of the most played games in the world coming in 6th as the most played in the world and 4th as the most watched game on the world.

History of tennis

Games of racket and ball (including real tennis in Great Britain, royal tennis in Australia, and court tennis in the United States) originated from a 12th and 13th century French handball game called jeu de paume (game of the palm).

Although the origins of modern tennis are not clear, many experts believe tennis was invented in 1873 by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, a British army officer who invented a game called sphairistikè, then called lawn tennis, from which modern outdoor tennis evolved.

Rewards of Playing Tennis

You’ll find many rewards come with being a tennis player. It’s a way to meet new people, release pent up tension and stress, challenge yourself physically and challenge yourself mentally some people saying tennis is truly like an active game of chess at times.

As you gain experience and a reputation you’ll come to find tennis has a huge network of people involved from all walks of life that you can meet and play with and against.

Tennis tends to be popular in richer countries, including the United States, Asian countries, Australia and Europe.

Competitions and Tournaments

There are many competitions around the world for every level of player.

Most people start with social tennis hitting with friends or family. As players get better the next move from social tennis is into social competition at your local tennis club. Then for more competition and the chance to win prize money with your tennis skills there are tournaments. Each country has their own way to differentiate tournament levels.

The most prestigious and highest level tournaments in the world are Grand Slams. There are four of them: Australian Open in January, then the French Open in May/June, Wimbledon June/July, and then the US Open in August every year.

How To Win More Often

One of the things that you may have come to this site for is to look for a solid strategy to help your win more matches.

You can win more tennis matches if you have a real burning desire to do so. If you get into the habit of regularly practicing ball placement and practice reading your opponents strengths and weaknesses you will get better and better.

Anyway, back to my synopsis of what tennis is all about…

The Rules

In the game, there is doubles and singles:

Doubles is two players each end of the court and uses the whole court
Singles is one-on-one play where the outer alley of the tennis court is not used

When scoring, if you play tournaments, most the time you play best of three sets. In social tennis it is popular to only play one set.

A set is won by the person who wins 6 games first. However if the score reaches 5 games all then the match has to be won 7 games to 5 but if the score ties at 6 games all the players then play a tie-break. A tie break is won by the first person to win 7 points and they must win by 2 points eg. 7-5 but if it ties at 6 points each they play on until one player wins by 2 points.

Game scoring looks like this:

0 points = the word “Love”

1 point = 15

2 points = 30

3 points = 40

1 point each you say 15 All

2 points each you say 30 All

3 points each you say the word “Deuce” (not 40 All)

At Deuce the person who wins the next point has the “Advantage” and depending on what country you are playing in you might say this differently, some players say “Your Ad” or “My Ad” or “Advantage  Receiver” or “Advantage Server”

If the player with the advantage wins that next point they win the game. If the player with the advantage looses the next point the score goes back to Deuce and the game is played until the player with the Advantage wins the point and that means they win that game.

But if the game didn’t get to Duece (40-40) the player who won 4 points first wins. For example if the score was 40-15 the player with 40 wins the game if they win that next point.

Tennis for Dummies

At the end of the day it’s about getting out there, having a good time, getting fresh air and challenging yourself physically and mentally. It’s a sport you can enjoy for life.

Feel free to have a look around the site and enjoy,

Lill
