The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey is a thoroughly mind expanding tennis book that teaches you to play ‘out of your mind’ tennis.

If you’ve ever wondered the secret to playing ‘out of your mind’ tennis (as the tennis commentators word it) on demand rather than by fluke then you’ll know how it happens after reading. To share a little summary of how to do is to know how to let go and trust yourself, but the rest you’ll have to discover by reading the book yourself.

Have you ever lost to someone you know you are better than? Or wondered how you could miss that easy shot? Most players say ‘it’s just not my day’ because we’re not sure how these things can logically happen. Tim gives insights that explain why this happens and he shows that it doesn’t need to be this way.

The Inner Game of Tennis, in summary, confronts head on the ‘beating yourself’ that happens when you’re on the tennis court. Such as when you yell at yourself, or talk to yourself in your mind instructing yourself what you should be doing. He explains that this ‘talking to yourself’ is actually a conversation that affects whether your balls land in or out.

This book is a combination of practical information and subconscious awareness giving you techniques, that when applied, can calm the most self-crucifying tennis player out there.

For those of you who are coaches you might find it useful to read this book, especially if you have clients who can’t seem to grasp what you are telling them to do. I can confirm that his methods have helped me teach players more effectively.

The book gets heavy in places but regardless of this it’s still easy to read because the writing style is everyday language.

I recommend that every tennis player should have a copy of this book in their arsenal so they can understand the importance of self-talk.
