Something I really like about the overall feel of this book is the constant priority placed on being able to rally with another person. The book doesn’t just focus on how you hit the ball, or on winning, it really prioritizes learning how to control where the ball lands and how to rally with your tennis partner.

I’ve used this book to coach kids from age 4 and up as well as using many of the drills and games for coaching adult tennis players.

Coaching Youth Tennis is full of great ideas for coaches.

The books begins with helping parents effectively manage your relationship with your child if you are their tennis coach. Coaching your child can put a strain on the parent-child relationship from time to time but this book has some great suggestions to keep the parent-child relationship healthy.

Also covered are the basics of being an effective coach with a focus on helping you communicate well with young players.

There are games and drills for the age groups 6-12 and 10-18 years old (and as I mentioned earlier I also have found a lot of the drills and games in this book relevant for coaching adult players.)

Also included are Season Plans. The Season Plans outline consecutive lesson plans over the US club seasons and the US school calendar. The Season Plans can easily be be easily modified to suit your own tennis calendar if these dates are not relevant to your country or tennis coaching schedule.

Diagrams of drills make them easy to grasp.

Stroke technique is also covered and the diagrams and explanations are great if you are teaching beginners (of any age).

We have had a lot of fun with games from this book in my coaching sessions, especially the rallying games where keeping the ball in play is the goal. Keeping the ball in play is great for children’s concentration. You will probably find that your kids will strive to reach the set goal (For Example: keep the rally going for 20 hits), goal setting helps to keep players inspired and motivated to improve.

Have fun :-)
