The best tennis tactic and strategy is this – Have a Plan.
There are many tennis books that can teach you how to plan (many of those books have been reviewed on this website under “All Reviews” to the left) but you should definitely ask your coach for some tennis lessons on strategy next time you’re get a chance.
Having a tactical plan is the simplest way to improve your game.
By preparing yourself before you step on the court no matter what level you play I guarantee you will feel a boost in confidence and a boost in concentration on the court.
Stick With Your Chosen Tactics
Once you have decided what your plan is you’re off to a great start, but in order to see if your plan will work you need to discipline yourself to stick with that tactic once you’re on the court.
Don’t give up straight away on a tactic when it doesn’t work the first time. If you’ve worked out a strategy prior to playing that’s based on good information about your opponent’s game then don’t quit on the tactic if it fails the first time. I suggest changing it if you’re down 5-0 in the first set, even 4-0 (you should work out what suits your comfort level as to what the score is when you change your planned tactic match-to-match).
What’s important is not to use a planned tactic only one or two times before giving up on it, give it a chance.
Don’t Change Your Tactic When You’re Winning
If you only remember one thing about this tactical tennis lesson it should be this: If you are winning and you’re only a short distance from taking the match DO NOT change your tactics, don’t try anything new! The reason for this is – whatever tactic got you into a winning position is the same tactic you need to keep doing until you shake hands.
Changing tactics is the biggest mistake I see players make when they get close to a win. Many players take chances right before they are about to win a set or a match and end up wondering how they lost their lead, or worse, the match. Don’t fall into that trap.
